Sports Institutions in Knowsley - Liverpool City Region
Knowsley is a wash with sporting talent, whether that be world champion boxers,
record-breaking gold medalist athletes or international footballers,
there is something special about this borough.
When it comes to producing talented individuals, they are head and shoulders above anyone else. A long list of Everton and Liverpool footballers have descended from these parts, including 3 out the 23 man squad that England took to the World Cup in 2014. Non-league clubs like Precot Cables have been around since 1884, they've played in a number of different leagues and cups throughout the ages winning many of them. Other clubs from Knowsley over the years include the likes of Kirkby Town. They collapsed in 1987 and reformed under the name of Knowsley United FC. They were winners of the North West Counties Football League, the Champions Cup and the Liverpool Senior Cup. They folded again in 1997 due to a lack of funding. It is an absolute shame that money hasn't trickled down to grass roots football the way it should have, if the FA really want England to win the World Cup again, it's areas like these and lower league clubs like these that need the most investment.
One ray of sunshine through all of this is Knowsley South Football Club, they are an FA Charter Standard Development Club that founded in 1987, under the Liverpool County FA. They run a number of football teams providing opportunities for ages of six and eighteen years of age.
Athletics is also beginning to produce some outstanding individuals following the creation of the Knowsley Harriers Athletics Club in Halewood. Where record breaking track and field athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson was born of course. She continues to wow people the world over with her extraordinary exploits in the Athletics arena. Along with hard-hitting World champion boxers like John Conteh and Paul Hodkinson that have also come from Knowsley.
They truelly do have an embarrassment of riches in professional sports men and women that any borough of any size would be extrememly proud of.
Prescot Cables FC
Formed way back in 1884, Prescot Cables Football Club are one of the few surviving clubs in the borough. They currently play in the Northern Premier League Division One North and play their home games at Valerie Park in Prescot.
